The Pickle

We have successfully added a pickle to our jewelry class! A pickle (yes, a pickle) is a warm acidic mixer (in our case) of vinegar, salt and water that makes it easier to clean jewelry. It is a little slower than professional pickles that use a stronger acid, but it is non-toxic and effective. It's called a pickle because years ago, they would use the left over vinegar from making pickles to clean metal. Hopefully student's work will come out beautiful and shiny!!

Using the Big Kiln

We had so much work coming out of students that I had to start loading the BIG KILN today after work! Today in Ceramics, we worked on glazing our coil pots, whistles, and embellished bowls. We had a lot of fun but now I can't WAIT for the kiln to fire on Monday. It is so exciting when students are producing such cool stuff! This is the highlight of my week so far! I can't wait to see what we get coming from the class next! Keep watching to find out what these glazed pieces look like on Tuesday! :)

Something I made as inspiration for the next project! Squidy!

All the wet clay that I hope dries by Monday so I can fire!

Frustration Pots

We have been diligently working in our Ceramics class and we have has some phenomenal success!! We created the classic frustration pots where students make a tree like vessel that they then add an "unique" face. The project is fun and has a great success rate because students don't have to make anything look perfect- it looks good messy! This work by Abraham is a great example of a frustrated man- and I love the mushroom!!

Portfolio Track

For students who are on the Portfolio Track at Chelsea there are a couple things to consider! First is the Portfolio preparation which can be accessed on this website:

This is an online reference to build a stronger portfolio to help students who may consider applying to art schools in the future. A couple events that are coming up include the Michigan ArtPrize for 18 and under:

"Entries will only be accepted September 18, 2013 – September 26, 2013. The competition is entirely online, so artwork must be submitted digitally. Please e-mail all submissions to If your submission is a video, please upload your video to YouTube and e-mail the link."

We will be encouraging students to submit art to the Teen Art festival as well as other local art competitions! The College of Creative Studies will be coming to visit on November 7th and Kendall College of Art Design will be coming on January 22nd.

Still is not the Life

The first week is done and while there were a couple bumpy moments, each class is doing well and excited to be part of the art department.

Ceramics made texture wheels, crests, patterned bowls and extraordinarily tall and skinny mugs. They will be fired after the weekend and then we can start glazing the lot!

Jewelry got a introduction into sawing and they are designing a negative /positive piece of jewelry that they will sand down and buff to be bright and shiny.

Studio art is working on a still life project where they get to use any design techniques for the final product. The projects are going to be a variety of interpretations of the concept of still life. Many are colorful and full of life.

Maria and Kylie did a contour line drawing and painted between the lines.
